Texas Motor Speedway with David Starr

This week I was able to catch David Starr at Texas Motor Speedway where he was beginning preparations for two races this weekend: the Xfinity Series race on Saturday, and the Cup Series race on Sunday.

I began by asking how he was feeling. He replied that he is very excited. In fact, he said that he “is always excited,” but that Texas Motor Speedway is special for him: “It’s my home track. I love it. There are so many fans that are going to be at the race, and just the energy there at the racetrack is awesome.”

David went on to express the thankfulness he has for his sponsors for helping to fund these races. I asked him about the cars he will be racing this weekend, and he told me that he will be driving the Whataburger Toyota Supra in the Xfinity Series, and then the ConectUS Ford Mustang on Sunday. He said that the ConectUS and Kyocera wrapped car will be a great-looking car when it is unveiled early on Sunday morning.

I then asked David if he notices a difference in the performance of his Ford Mustang versus the Toyota Camry that he sometimes drives in the Cup Series races. David responded that “the Ford Mustang… has a little more horsepower.” I asked David if he believes he has a home team advantage at Texas Motor Speedway. He smiled broadly and said, “I like to think I have an advantage,” and “you can feel the energy – before the race starts, they do the prayer and the national anthem and you see the crowd, and the energy here at the racetrack is magical.”

David says he has a perfect line at Texas Motor Speedway that he likes to follow. However, “during a race you don’t always get to run that perfect line. You’ve got someone trying to pass you, you’re trying to pass somebody, you’re racing side-by-side with somebody,” so it is not always possible.

David then told us about the preparations he’s making for this special weekend. He honored his fans and confirmed he will always give his maximum effort: “You can’t motivate me any more than what I am motivated myself.”

I ended the interview by wishing David the best of fortune this weekend on behalf of everyone at ConectUS, everyone at Kyocera, and all our regular viewers of The Horn.

David will be racing this coming Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway. The race will be broadcast on NBC starting at 12:30 CDT/1:30 EDT. We can hardly wait. On Sunday evening, We’ll have a post-race interview with David. If you have any questions you’d like me to ask him, please us a line.
