Motivation with David Starr

David Starr hardly ever watches TV – except for NASCAR of course! David spends as much time with his family as his racing commitments allow. He’s always doing something that adds value: something meaningful. I began this week’s interview by asking David how he motivates himself to do that.

David, as ebullient as ever, said, “Man Neil, I’ve got so much energy… I just want to succeed in life.” This set the tone for the animated discussion that followed. David is motivated to always being better, to improve, to be the best he can be. He aspires to be the best driver possible, and the best dad for his family.

“I’ve got so much stuff I want to accomplish and want to do… I think we’re just born with it; we want to succeed.”

But it’s more than that: he wants to motivate his sons to emulate his passion, motivation, and work ethic: “I want to show them you can be successful too, whether that’s in sports, school or just life in general.”

I then put David on the spot and asked him if he has advice for folks who feel they are not motivated, perhaps in their job or perhaps even finding difficulty in getting out of bed each morning. He expressed great sympathy for people who find themselves in such a situation: “I would just tell somebody that struggles to get out of bed in the morning – and really they struggle to go to work that day, every day – to find something you’re passionate about.” “I would tell them just make a change. Work in an area that you’re passionate about – that you love.”

David does not think of what he does for a living as a job. He says he works all the time but does not feel like he’s working.

David has an amazing life, and I’m looking forward to my next meeting with him. He is a veteran racing driver who participates in several NASCAR series. ConectUS and Kyocera International, Inc. are delighted to be sponsoring David and his car in the NASCAR Cup Series race scheduled for October 17 at Texas Motor Speedway. The race is due to be broadcast live on NBC.
