David Starr – The Early Years

In this episode of The Horn, David Starr tells us about his childhood, going all the way back to age three, and his recollections of his family’s neighbor who owned and raced stock cars.

He remembers, “like it was yesterday” sitting on the bleachers at Meyer Speedway in Houston, Texas, a half-mile asphalt racetrack. Of the race drivers, David effused, “These guys, they put on a heck of a show. We watched these cars racing around in circles. [There were] wrecks and sparks and fire. It was amazing, it grabbed ahold of me at a young age, and when I was four, five years old, I knew what I wanted to do.”

When David was seven, David’s father worked in a pit crew and was, “on the road a lot.” David says that without the dad being around, he and his two brothers were always exploring and tinkering: “We were so bad, that my grandparents called us ‘The Termites’ because we got into everything.”

When David reached 13, David joined a class at the local dirt track where he and other teenagers built roll-cages for and removed extraneous weight from, regular production cars: stock cars. David remembers coming home one day and telling his dad, “I want to race, Dad, I want to race.” Shortly after this, a family friend gave David a 1974 Buick Skylark that David then turned into a racecar; and David started racing at age 14.

I’m looking forward to my next conversation with David Starr. David is a veteran racing driver who participates in several NASCAR series. ConectUS and Kyocera International, Inc. are delighted to be sponsoring David and his car in the NASCAR Cup Series race scheduled for October 17 at Texas Motor Speedway. The race is due to be broadcast live on NBC.
