From Las Vegas to Talladega with David Starr

I managed to catch David Starr back in Texas for a couple of days between last weekend’s race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and next weekend’s race at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. As usual, despite his grueling schedule, David was animated and excited, and his excitement rubbed off on me and on our camera crew.

I started our conversation by asking David how he felt about last weekend’s race in Las Vegas. He said that “we had a great race, the car was competitive, it drove good, there was a lot of race fans there, [and] a lot of excitement in the air.”

I then asked David about how he responded to seeing a collision right in front of him during the race and how he managed to avoid being caught up in that multi-car crash. He said it was all about communication with his support team: “As it was happening, my spotter was talking to me and I could see the cars sliding sideways and hitting the wall… the first thing I did was take my foot off the gas pedal and put my foot on the brake. But my spotter was telling me, ‘Hey, go high,’ because when everybody crashed, they went up the track and hit the wall, and they were going to come back down the [bank] so I was going high – slowing the racecar down – and at the last minute [my spotter] said, ‘go low,’ so man I cut that baby to the left real sharply and was able to maneuver around the wreck.”

I asked how the decision is made for a damaged car to continue the race after a collision. David told me that NASCAR has a standard. However, it is normally the driver and his team that assesses whether or not their car can or should continue in the race after an incident. David referred to the collision suffered by Josh Berry on Saturday in Las Vegas: “you saw [the process] play out in Las Vegas, and look, he went on to win the race.”

David then talked bout how NASCAR race teams are funded. He told me that passion takes a team a long way. However, “it takes a lot of money to make these racecars go fast. So, I would tell you that budgets play a big role in a car that’s going to win a race.”

We finished by looking forward to this weekend’s race in Talladega. I asked David how he is preparing for this race, to which he replied with a smile, “Oh man! I’m always ready to race, Neil.” He talked about how he maintains his fitness, remains hydrated, and stays positive. “I’d race every day if there was a race every day.”

David has an amazing life, and I’m looking forward to my next meeting with him. He is a veteran racing driver who participates in several NASCAR series. ConectUS and Kyocera International, Inc. are delighted to be sponsoring David and his car in the NASCAR Cup Series race scheduled for October 17 at Texas Motor Speedway. The race is due to be broadcast live on NBC.
