“Are you ready to move forward?”

I hate that question.

If you’ve done your job correctly, you shouldn’t have to dramatically ask for the sale. The customer should already be moving toward it.

One of the most underrated ways to get them there?

Make them laugh.

Not constantly. Not with rehearsed jokes. And definitely don’t walk into a sales meeting thinking you’re suddenly a stand-up comedian.

The secret is using just the right amount of humor at exactly the right time.

More importantly: READ THE ROOM.

People know when they’re being sold. The second they feel the pitch coming, the walls start going up. They analyze your words differently. They question your motives. They start waiting for the close.

Humor can completely change that dynamic.

Get someone genuinely laughing with you and, for a moment, the salesperson/customer relationship disappears. You’re simply two people having a conversation.

That’s powerful.

Because people tend to do business with people they like, trust, and feel comfortable around.

But humor can also kill a sale.

If someone is discussing a serious business problem, losing money, dealing with a deadline, or explaining something important to them, shut up and listen.

That’s reading the room.

The best salespeople I’ve known have an instinct for when they can push, when they should listen, when they should challenge—and when they can make someone laugh.

And here’s where it gets interesting.

Humor can be incredibly effective when you’re approaching the end of a sales conversation.

Everyone knows why you’re there. You know it. They know it.

So why suddenly turn into a stereotypical salesperson?

Don’t change personalities just because it’s time to close.

Keep talking. Keep listening. Keep the conversation comfortable. Then naturally transition into what happens next:

“When do you want this delivered?”

“Who should we work with on implementation?”

“Let’s get the paperwork started.”

Notice what’s missing?

You never asked them to buy.

You created enough trust, confidence, and comfort that moving forward became the natural next step.

That’s selling.

Humor didn’t close the deal.

You did.

Humor just helped the customer forget they were being sold.

So use it.

Just remember the most important rule:

Read. The. Room.

One of the greatest skills a salesperson can develop isn’t knowing what to say—it’s knowing when to stop talking.

Sales professionals spend years learning product knowledge, objection handling, presentations, and negotiation techniques. Those are all valuable skills. However, one of the biggest mistakes made in sales happens in the final moments of a conversation. The customer has already agreed, the concerns have been addressed, and the buying signals are obvious… yet the salesperson keeps talking.

Unfortunately, many sales are lost not because the salesperson failed to make the case, but because they continued making it long after the customer was ready to buy.

There is an old saying in sales: “The first person who talks after the close usually loses.” While that’s not always literally true, there is a lot of wisdom behind it.

When a prospect says, “That sounds good,” “I think this will work,” or “Let’s move forward,” your job shifts immediately. You are no longer selling—you are helping them buy. Every additional feature you introduce, every unnecessary story you tell, or every new objection you accidentally create gives the customer another opportunity to second-guess a decision they had already made.

Think of it like landing an airplane. The hard work is already done. The runway is clear. The last thing you want to do is pull back on the controls and start circling the airport again.

Great salespeople recognize buying signals. They listen carefully, answer the question that was asked, and confidently move toward the close. They don’t feel the need to fill every moment of silence. In fact, they embrace silence because silence often means the customer is thinking, processing, and making a decision.

Many salespeople become uncomfortable with quiet moments and instinctively begin talking again. Ironically, that’s when they start introducing new pricing concerns, technical details, or “one more thing” comments that can derail the entire opportunity.

Confidence doesn’t always sound like talking. Often, confidence sounds like patience.

Once you’ve earned the customer’s trust, answered their questions, and presented a solution that meets their needs, ask for the business. Then stop talking.

Let the customer respond.

The best closers understand that the goal isn’t to deliver the longest presentation or prove they know the most. The goal is to help the customer make a confident decision.

Remember, people don’t buy because you talked the longest. They buy because you listened, solved a problem, earned their trust, and knew exactly when to stop talking.

Sometimes, the most profitable words you’ll ever say are followed by silence.

One of the most valuable lessons in business leadership can be summed up in four simple words: Inspect what you expect. Expectations alone do not produce results. Goals, quotas, and sales targets are only effective when leaders consistently monitor progress, provide accountability, and coach their teams toward success.

Many sales managers make the mistake of believing that once expectations have been communicated, their job is complete. In reality, that is where the real work begins.

Successful outside sales teams thrive on consistency. Every salesperson should know exactly what activities are expected each day, whether it’s prospecting, scheduling appointments, conducting customer visits, following up on proposals, or asking for referrals. But simply assigning these tasks isn’t enough. Leaders must regularly inspect the activity, measure the outcomes, and provide constructive feedback.

Inspection is not about micromanagement—it’s about leadership.

The highest-performing sales organizations understand that activity creates opportunity. If a salesperson consistently makes quality customer visits, uncovers business needs, and follows a proven sales process, the results will eventually follow. By inspecting these activities, managers can identify problems before they become missed quotas. Maybe a salesperson isn’t making enough first appointments. Perhaps proposals are being sent but not followed up on. These small issues become much easier to correct when discovered early.

Accountability also creates culture.

When every member of the team knows their performance is being reviewed fairly and consistently, standards naturally rise. Top performers appreciate accountability because it highlights their success, while struggling team members receive the coaching they need before falling too far behind. A culture built on accountability quickly becomes a culture built on achievement.

Technology has made inspection easier than ever. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms, sales dashboards, and reporting tools allow leaders to monitor pipelines, conversion rates, appointment activity, and revenue trends in real time. However, reports alone don’t build successful teams. Great managers use those insights to have meaningful conversations, celebrate wins, remove obstacles, and help each salesperson improve.

The best sales leaders also inspect more than numbers. They ride along on customer visits, listen to sales calls, review presentations, and observe how their team interacts with prospects. Coaching based on firsthand observation is far more effective than coaching based solely on reports.

At the end of the day, people naturally focus on what leadership pays attention to. If managers consistently inspect customer activity, pipeline health, and follow-up discipline, those behaviors become habits. Those habits lead to stronger customer relationships, increased trust, higher closing percentages, and sustainable revenue growth.

Remember, expectations establish direction—but inspection drives execution. If you truly want to build a successful outside sales team, don’t simply expect excellence. Inspect what you expect, coach consistently, and watch your team transform expectations into measurable results.

What Is the Definition of Sales? Three Simple Words: Relationships, Relationships, and Relationships

Ask ten people to define sales and you’ll likely hear ten different answers. Some will say it’s about persuasion. Others will say it’s about closing deals, hitting quotas, or generating revenue. While all of those play a role, the true definition of sales can be summed up in just three simple words: relationships, relationships, and relationships.

Products change. Technology evolves. Pricing fluctuates. Competitors come and go. But one thing has remained constant throughout the history of business: people prefer to buy from people they know, trust, and respect.

The best sales professionals understand that they are not simply selling a product or service—they are building confidence. Every phone call, email, meeting, and follow-up is an opportunity to strengthen a relationship. When customers believe you genuinely care about helping them succeed, you’re no longer viewed as just another salesperson. You become a trusted advisor.

Relationships aren’t built overnight. They require consistency, honesty, and a willingness to listen more than you speak. Understanding a customer’s goals, challenges, and priorities allows you to offer solutions that truly make a difference. That’s where lasting partnerships begin.

Ironically, many people enter a sales conversation focused on what they want to say instead of what they need to hear. Great salespeople ask thoughtful questions, pay attention to the answers, and tailor their recommendations accordingly. Customers appreciate being understood far more than being given a rehearsed sales pitch.

Strong relationships also extend beyond the initial sale. Following up after the purchase, checking in periodically, and offering continued support demonstrate that your commitment didn’t end when the contract was signed. Those small gestures often lead to repeat business, referrals, and long-term loyalty—some of the most valuable assets any salesperson can have.

In today’s digital world, automation and artificial intelligence have made it easier than ever to communicate. Yet, they have also made genuine human connection even more valuable. A personal phone call, handwritten note, or sincere “How are things going?” can leave a lasting impression that no automated email ever could.

Successful sales isn’t about convincing someone to buy something they don’t need. It’s about earning the opportunity to solve a problem for someone who trusts you. That trust is built one conversation, one promise kept, and one relationship at a time.

So, the next time someone asks, “What is the definition of sales?” remember the simplest answer is often the most powerful:

Relationships. Relationships. Relationships.

Master that principle, and the sales will follow naturally.

In business, we often focus on perfecting our sales pitch, product knowledge, or customer service processes. While those are all important, one of the most effective communication tools costs absolutely nothing: a genuine smile.

It may sound surprising, but smiling while speaking on the phone can dramatically change how your voice is perceived. Even though the person on the other end of the line cannot see your facial expression, they can often hear it. A smile naturally changes your tone, pace, and inflection, making you sound more approachable, confident, enthusiastic, and engaged.

Whether you are speaking with a prospective customer, an existing client, or even a fellow employee, your attitude is reflected in your voice. A positive, upbeat tone communicates respect and appreciation for the person you’re speaking with. It tells them that you are happy to help, interested in their needs, and genuinely invested in the conversation.

People naturally respond to positive energy. A customer who calls with a question or concern may begin the conversation feeling frustrated or uncertain. A warm, friendly voice can quickly lower those barriers and establish trust. Likewise, when speaking with a prospective customer, enthusiasm is contagious. Your excitement about helping them often becomes their confidence in doing business with you.

Smiling also has benefits for the speaker. Studies have shown that smiling can reduce stress, improve mood, and increase confidence. When you smile, your body releases chemicals associated with positive emotions, helping you remain calm and focused during challenging conversations. Instead of sounding rushed, impatient, or distracted, you project professionalism and optimism.

This simple habit is equally important during face-to-face meetings. A welcoming smile is one of the first impressions people notice. It creates an environment where customers feel comfortable asking questions, discussing concerns, and building long-term relationships. Whether in person or over the phone, a smile demonstrates kindness, respect, and confidence.

The next time your phone rings, take a brief moment before answering. Sit up straight, take a breath, and smile. That small action may completely change the tone of the conversation. Customers may not remember every word you said, but they will remember how you made them feel.

In today’s competitive business environment, products and pricing can often be matched by competitors. Exceptional customer experiences, however, are much harder to duplicate. Sometimes, creating that memorable experience begins with something as simple as a smile—one that your customer may never see, but will almost certainly hear.

In business, there is a fine line between productivity and overload. Many leaders pride themselves on managing multiple projects at once, believing that more activity equals more progress. However, there is an important lesson hidden in the phrase, “Juggling 9 or Dropping 10.”

Imagine a skilled juggler comfortably keeping nine balls in the air. The performance is smooth, controlled, and impressive. Then someone hands them a tenth ball. Instead of improving the act, the additional ball may cause the entire routine to collapse. Suddenly, balls begin dropping, focus is lost, and what was once successful becomes chaotic.

The same principle applies in business.

Every project requires time, attention, resources, and decision-making. While organizations often seek growth through new opportunities, there comes a point where taking on more work does not create more value. Instead, it spreads teams too thin, creates bottlenecks, increases errors, and delays completion. The result is often ten partially completed projects instead of nine successful ones.

Effective leaders understand that capacity management is just as important as ambition. They regularly evaluate workloads, available resources, and strategic priorities. Rather than asking, “What else can we add?” they ask, “What can we successfully complete?”

This mindset requires discipline. Opportunities will always exist. New clients, initiatives, and ideas can be exciting, but every commitment carries a cost. Adding one more project may mean reducing the quality, speed, or focus of existing work. The strongest organizations recognize that saying “no” to one opportunity often allows them to say “yes” to excellence elsewhere.

The goal is not to operate below capacity. Businesses should challenge themselves and maintain enough activity to drive growth and innovation. However, sustainable success comes from finding the right balance—enough projects to maximize productivity, but not so many that performance suffers.

A healthy organization knows its limits and respects them. It monitors workloads, communicates resource constraints, and prioritizes execution over excessive expansion. Teams that can consistently deliver on nine important projects will outperform teams that continually struggle with ten.

Success is not measured by how many balls are in the air. It is measured by how many remain there. In business, knowing the difference between juggling nine and dropping ten can be the difference between growth and frustration, excellence and mediocrity, or success and failure.

Team Texas and ConectUS have joined forces for a two-year agreement. Together their goal is to educate small and medium businesses and enterprise customers on the benefits of new technologies, while also showcasing the fusion of education and fun in effective corporate events.

Kim Starr is the President and Owner of Team Texas Racing: “We’ve been very happy to have partnered with ConectUS and over time our relationship of trust has brought us closer and closer. Now is the perfect time for us to formalize that partnership.”

John Scully, President and General Manager of ConectUS, remarked upon the great benefit to ConectUS of this partnership: “The ConectUS Car has come to be synonymous with the ConectUS brand. People recognize our NASCAR, our pit shirts, and, of course, David Starr himself. David’s warm generosity of spirit and servant leadership mirrors our ethos of ethical behavior, making David our perfect spokesman.”

Rick Stapp is the ConectUS Executive Vice President of Technology and Marketing: “We see so many synergies here. Our channel partners and their customers are interested in the use of cutting-edge technologies, not only in the business environment but also in sports. Our audiences are fascinated by David’s descriptions of how NASCAR technologies work together to provide top performance with driver safety.”

The increased visibility for Team Texas has led to a doubling of the number of School driving days. On driving days, novice drivers receive classroom instructions on how to drive a NASCAR safely. Then, under the guidance of an instructor, they get to drive a real NASCAR at speeds of up to 150 mph. Driving days are open to the public by appointment; and to corporations who wish to give their staff or customers their most exciting day out ever.

David Starr and ConectUS Racing enjoyed an evening of fun with The Ticket radio show at their Nights Out event. This event ran from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m on September 20 and offered attendees the chance to listen to their favorite radio personalities up close and personal.

The Ticket had multiple giveaways that included tickets to Mavericks, Rangers, Stars, and Cowboys games; and multiple concerts. It was a great opportunity for listeners to interact with their favorite radio stars such as Bob Sturm and Corby Davidson, and the giveaways and contests were a cherry on top of an awesome event.

And of course, David Starr brought the ConectUS Car to Nights Out. Fans were constantly taking photos standing next to the car and enthusing about a piece of racing history right in front of them. ConectUS has partnered with David for the past two years, and this event was a great opportunity for NASCAR fans to meet David and see the beloved ConectUS car.

David and his wife Kim also took the opportunity to tell folks about Team Texas Racing School and the organizers had set up a table, front and center at the event. David and Kim also gave away multiple four-lap passenger rides at the Team Texas Racing School. This is the prize that allows winners to ride in the passenger seat of a NASCAR for several laps around the track at Texas Motor Speedway – at high speeds!

Sports fans of all ages enjoyed Night Out as they got to meet their favorite radio personalities, compete in contests such as trivia, enter into giveaways, and have the chance to meet NASCAR driver David Starr.
