I was thinking of you…

It sounds like a greeting card, doesn’t it? And why shouldn’t it?

Is there any prohibition against starting a sales conversation with these or similar words?

Hallmark has been doing very nicely, thank you, forever capturing the sound of sincerity with their slogans, and salespeople can learn a lot from these and similar phrase masters.

As I’ve said elsewhere, there are literally hundreds of ways to greet prospects and customers, while breaking the ice. Of course, you can have formal approaches that announce special sales, and the like.

And they’re fine, but what do you do between sales? What is your reason for calling, then?

Imagine the following opener:

“Hello, Derek? This is Rick with ConectUS Wireless. How’s it going? Good. I was looking at the paper and reading about some interesting remodeling projects, and you popped into mind about our last conversation, and I thought it would be a good time to catch up with you. How’s business?”

The most important purpose served by an opener is to give YOU a feeling that the call is justified. Mostly, customers are happy to hear from us; we need to get over our call reluctance and any concerns that we might foster about sounding foolish.

Here’s my basic criterion for having a decent opener:

Can you write it out, in everyday, conversational language, and have it sound good?

Look back at my example, above. I call it the “Thinking of You” approach.

I’m comfortable saying these exact words, and as long as that’s the case, I’m sure they’ll be well received by customers because they take their cue from me.

If we sound insecure, they’ll be, too. If we’re unselfconscious, they’ll follow that lead, as well.
Experiment with various openers, and put them to use.

Remember, the “hallmark” of a good salesperson is one who stays close to his customers, and by doing this; he creates and harvests good will.

This is the first in a series of articles that highlight why business agents should bring their customers over to Verizon by partnering with ConectUS Wireless.

In our competitive world, you want to offer your business clients the best options and value possible. Our agents feel the same way, and this is why they stick with us. We’re ConectUS Wireless, a Technology Services Agency that’s been around since 1974. We have an ever-growing partner network of telecoms agents who sell wireless services and products to American SMBs in all 50 states.

Together, we harness the strengths of the Verizon brand and product portfolio to deliver value propositions only available through the Verizon Partner Network – and we invite you to join us.

Verizon consistently comes top of independent studies for reliability and for coverage. Verizon has a large portfolio for business customers like your clients. Let’s look at just some of that business portfolio.

Business Unlimited mobile plans provide your business customers with unlimited talk, text, and data on every line. They work on all of Verizon’s 5G network and LTE, each line has unlimited hotspot data, and the best call filter spam blocker currently available.

Verizon’s 5G Business Internet is second to none. Your business customers can self-install a modem in one location, or in multiple locations across the U.S. and receive one bill from one provider. Each location can receive at least 100Mbps of bandwidth: more than sufficient for SMBs; and the reliability is exceptional. The price points are extremely competitive and guaranteed for ten years, and right now there are no start-up costs.

Ultra Wideband is the new super-speed network from Verizon. Offering mobility device bandwidths of 100Mbps and upwards, and sometimes as much as Gigabit speeds. This means that field staff is not only able to keep in touch, but also they can work from their vehicle, or from a prospect’s office. Giving them more than enough bandwidth to present live demos of their services and apps. Delivery services are benefiting enormously from Verizon’s connectivity, and we’ll talk about the new minimal lag-time in another article coming soon.

One Talk is an integrated, cloud-based phone system that blows the competition out of the water. Your SMBs can have one inbound number – or multiple inbound numbers – automatically directing each call to the right person, whether they are at their office phone, on a PC or laptop, or using their mobile device. One talk has so many features that it deserves its own article too.

The Complete Business Bundle is a curated service that allows SMBs that operate in a single location to choose only what they need now, and then upscale as their business grows. Typically, a small business will start with Business Internet, a desk phone, security software, and 24/7 dedicated tech support.

Yes. Verizon has a strong portfolio and a great reputation for reliability, and for products and services that offer solid value to SMBs. ConectUS has a longstanding reputation for sustaining agents just like you. Let’s show Verizon what we can do by bringing our best customers over to the best network ever!

Stuart was a managed services provider looking to grow his company. He created a cold calling plan to reach three different micro-segments that he’d identified as his hottest opportunities. He built a strategy that he thought was a dynamite approach. He learned how to tailor his message to different companies, tips to get past gatekeepers, and techniques for leaving gripping voicemails.

Stuart was excited! He spent weeks perfecting everything, holding off on any calls until he felt he was fully prepared.

And then it was time to execute.

After two weeks of failed attempts, Stuart fessed up. He didn’t want to pick up the phone.

He’d convinced himself that this was the right way to prospect. He assumed that all successful salespeople did it, and if his business was going to be successful, he had to master it, too.

Not true.

Cold calling can be one of the most inefficient ways to find leads. Unless you have a list of specific contacts you want to reach, it simply isn’t your best technique to fill your funnel.

Stuart then became a passionate believer in alternate ways of prospecting, especially when you’ve got a big region you’re attempting to cover and you’re strapped with a large number to sell. Instead, you need a plan that’ll bring leads in the door in a manner that’s comfortable for you.

It’s time to change your prospecting strategy. Here are some ideas that Stuart learned:

Start an email campaign. Afraid of the spam laws? Keep your list small and personalize your emails to participants’ needs so it feels as if you sat down to write them an individual message. Send a series of 3-4 emails three days apart to encourage a response.

Know your target market. Stuart knew where to look for his hottest opportunities. You want to do the same. Keep your micro-segments small, 20-125 contacts at a time, so you can be more personal in your communications.

Hold an online event. Sound time-consuming and expensive? You can run one practically for free so don’t let the price stop you. If content or participation is your concern, remember that you’re the expert. Make your topic relevant to your target market’s top issues and they’ll want to hear what you have to say. Share recommendations based on work you’ve done with other clients. Offer something at the end that’ll separate hot prospects from warm leads.

Use social media, press releases and/or articles to get noticed. They’ll keep you in front of your target market where they get to know you as an expert. You’ll begin to create a relationship even before they require your assistance.

Create a mini-campaign by linking email, events, social media, and articles together to keep you in constant touch with your micro-segments. As a seller, you don’t have time to run a complicated 6-month campaign, but you can run a simple one over 6 weeks that generates new leads all along the way.

Some people love cold calling. But if you aren’t one of those people, relax, breathe a deep sigh of relief and change your prospecting strategy.

Not only will you build your funnel, but you’ll also create awareness for yourself and your company through consistent exposure. When your target prospects have a need, they’ll remember you and reach out. And isn’t that so much more inviting than interrupting their day with a cold call?

The more you learn each day the clearer the sales process becomes. The greater your ability to understand what your prospects really want the more astute you will become as a sales professional. So many times we get caught up focusing on the product or service and do not take a moment to stop and think about what the prospect is really after.

Last year around the world hundreds of thousands of electric power saws were sold, the ironic thing is nobody really needed an electric power saw, what they did need was wood to be cut, and fast! The electric power saw was simply the vehicle for achieving the objective.

When talking to a prospect always ask yourself, what is the prospect really after here? Is it the product or is it what the product will give them? Be sure to always steer the discussion towards what need the product will satisfy rather the product itself.

Nobody really wants to buy a smartphone, they simply want reliable communication device that can do everything on the go that they can do from their office. Once you fully understand and adapt this concept your sales figures will improve.

Your ability to earn more commission is directly related to your ability to continuously learn new things! So be sure you do not take any short cuts here, there is no substitute for hard work.

The amount of success you will attract in your sales performance is in direct proportion to the amount of effort you are will to put in.

Remember, when speaking with a prospect, it is your ability to show them how your product will satisfy their want that will bring you the most success.

There is an incredible amount of information on how to do cold calls. I have seen 3, 4, 7 and 8 step processes. While there are similarities, each expert’s process is different. Based on my training and experience, we have boiled it all down into a straight-forward process for small business owners.

The basics include preparation, action and analysis.

Preparation:

Success in all kinds of marketing, including sales, is contingent on selecting the right target market. Once you have selected a clearly defined, viable target market (read our last article about how to define your target market), then you are able to identify the leads you want to call on. Targeting your leads makes it much easier for you to make a connection with your words, warming up the call. After creating your list of leads, divide the list into “A” and “B” lists.

Most professional salespeople use scripts when they cold call. You should write a basic script for when the prospect actually answers the phone and create other scripts for other possibilities. For example, if you get an answering machine, what will you say? List all the possible ways the phone will be answered and write scripts for each one.

Before writing your script, make sure you understand what your target market needs and what their problems are. You will need to communicate why the prospect would want to meet with you. Also, consider the reasons why they might say no to the appointment and preempt them in your script whenever possible.

The outcome you will almost always aim for with the script is to set an appointment for a sales meeting. Be very aware of your choice of words, and resist the urge to try to sell your product right then and there. Avoid conversations about price and other features of your product. Just focus on making sure the person is right for you and getting them to meet with you. The sales meeting is where you will do your pitch and sell the product.

It’s a good idea to call your “B” list first, to try out your script and make sure it works without worry.

Action:

Once you have completed your script, you are ready to get started. It is much easier to make a lot of calls at once compared to making a couple of calls every day. After you get started, you will gain momentum and it will get easier and easier. It might even be fun!

Put a smile on your face and be interested in the person on the phone with you.

Listen carefully to the answers your prospects give to your questions. They will give you great information you can use to guide them toward a sale, if your product is a good fit.

Ask for the appointment. The ‘assumptive close’ works well here and makes it very easy for the prospect. You assume that they will want to meet with you. You might say, “Would Tuesday or Wednesday work better for you? Morning or afternoon? 10:00 or 11:00? If the prospect needs more information or is just not interested, they will tell you at this point.

Do not be concerned when you get a ‘no’ answer, even if it happens often. Learn from this and continue. Don’t allow yourself to take it personally and become emotionally upset. The person on the phone with you doesn’t even know you, so they are not saying no to you, only to the appointment. Besides, as the true professional knows, the more ‘no’ answers you get, the closer you get to ‘yes’!

Analysis:

Keep track of your progress with each call so you can judge your success. Analyze what words, phrases or sentences evoke a positive reaction or dialogue that lead to a ‘yes’ when you ask for the appointment. If possible, keep track of the reasons people do not want to meet with you.

Adjust the script and make more calls!
