Selling Success is not only determined by your knowledge of the sales cycle, selling strategies, sales secrets or even conversational skills. As important as all of these things are, your personal emotions will often determine your level of attainment and financial success in your selling career and in other areas of your life. Regrettably, many sales training books and courses ignore this area completely and leave the reader out to dry.

To begin with, we will give you this powerful piece of advice. “Make the deliberate choice to conscientiously become fully aware of your feelings and corresponding emotions along with how those feelings and emotions affect your personal behaviors, either positively or negativity.”

Without this awareness, you will be totally powerless to modify, enhance or control these emotions and their effects on you. Without complete awareness, we find ourselves without personal control over our lives and all aspects of our careers. Look around and observe those you see around you. Who do you know that has major mood swings based on what is happening in the world, in their community, or in their immediate environment at home, or in the workplace?

Do these people also engage in behaviors that do not serve their overall best interests much of the time? These are people who are being controlled by their feelings and emotions rather than being people who are in control of them. These individuals can have their emotional buttons pushed by outside sources, events or other people without their consent, or even their knowledge. Most are simply not consciously aware that this is even happening to them.

This fact means that they surrender much of their personal power to others. If, as you were ‘looking around’, you happened to glance in the mirror and realize that group included you, chances are your feeling and corresponding emotions are holding you back from achieving the success you desire and deserve in your selling career and perhaps in your life in general.

Fortunately, most people do realize that they perform at a much higher level when they are happy and feel good. Doesn’t it then make good sense to work towards feeling good and happy each day? Coping with the challenges of life doesn’t make this an easy task all the time, but it is possible. Millions choose this as a way of life every single day, and it pays off.

Consider this.

When you experience an event or see something that either disturbs or brings joy to you, you will have feelings. These feelings then will trigger emotional energy within you which you will discharge in either a positive or negative way through your action or, in most cases, a reaction. The exciting thing about this is that, by and large, you get to choose which reaction it will be.

Will it be positive or negative based on the consequences, through your actions? This is where the problem lays for most people. Their actions are triggered by their feeling and emotions rather than rational conscious thought. Therefore, if they have felt something less than joyful they will then tend to be reactive and negative which will then cause additional feelings of sadness or anger. The alternative is to be proactive and positive which will produce joy and calmness which will create much better outcomes for you. Your feelings should guide you but not totally control you since they can be influenced by outside sources.

Regardless of whether you’re selling sprockets, widgets, ice cream or smartphones, you can be sure you’re not the only one selling it.

Here’s two sure-fire steps you can take that will keep you ahead of your competition. Why two steps? Simple. Your competition is probably trying to stay one step ahead of you. By taking the extra step, you’ll always be in the forefront.

There are many steps required to close a sale. And within each step there are elements that can help accelerate the decision-making process.

Decisions open doors, close sales or let you move on to the next prospect. Though a “no” is just as good as a yes because it saves time and effort, it’s the “yeses” that you take to the bank.

Of course, there is one thing you have that nobody else has – you. But unless you know how to effectively sell yourself, you could wind up hearing “no” more frequently.

The old axiom, “people buy from people they like”, still holds. Learning how to get people to like you, and you to like others is the cornerstone to sales success. Keep in mind that no one is so big or important that their presence alone will get them the sale.

How many times have you walked into a store to buy something, only to find that the salesperson was such a jerk that you’d rather forego the purchase than deal with that kind of person?

Taking a caring, nurturing approach when interacting with prospects or clients is one way to increase the probability that they will listen to what you have to say. And what you have to say about what you’re selling should be short and sweet! What’s the other axiom? “If you’re telling you’re not selling”.

Listening goes hand-in-hand with nurturing. From your first encounter to your last always go for a response from your prospect rather than merely dumping volumes of information on them, most of which either doesn’t apply or is more than they really need or ask for.

Let’s take a look at the following examples that illustrate a first encounter that will get your prospect responding.

Joe Smith is in line at the supermarket. During the wait, amidst the small talk, he gets the other party talking about work. He then says “I’m Joe Smith, I work with people who have problems with their air conditioning systems. Sometimes they’re utility bills are through the roof or their units make too much noise. Sometimes, for one reason or another, one room is too warm while the rest of the house is too cold. I don’t suppose any of those issues effect you or anyone you know?”

I call this little message by Joe his thirty-second spot. If you can develop one along Joe’s lines to use with your prospect, you’ve accomplished a number of things:

You’ve got the person thinking.

You’re not overtly selling.

You’re asking for a response.

If they say no, it’s ok.

They or someone they know may need to speak with you.

In a situation like this, you’re nurturing rather than telling them, “Hey, listen to me, I’m the greatest thing since sliced bread. Here’s what I can do for you”, which invariably leads into the typical “features and benefits” way to sell

Try it. They could wind up liking you much better and it could pave the way for a sale.

Does your business run on a sales engine or a sales effort? A sales effort is something that has to be done every time you want to make a sale. But, a sales engine is something that, once put into place, can bring you sale after sale without added effort. Here are a couple of examples …

A photographer gets to know a handful of bridal consultants that refer every new bride they meet to him. Each time they get a new client, he has the opportunity to get a phone call from that bride without having lifted a finger.

A home cleaning company establishes a relationship with organizations that provide temporary corporate housing for companies with newly relocated employees. The temporary housing companies contact the cleaning company each time they have a person vacate one of their units so they can prepare it for the next resident. Since the nature of the residences is temporary, they have a continual need for cleaning services.

In both of these examples, instead of spending valuable (potentially billable) work time on marketing, these companies are earning money. And during the time they do spend on marketing, they are focused on developing long-term relationships with sources of continual referral instead of tracking down each individual purchaser.

In the cleaning company example, they could be running classified ads, taking calls, visiting individual homes to provide cleaning estimates, etc. But all that effort only results in one job. There is an opportunity to clean each temporary residence 3-4 times per year. Multiply that figure by the number of units the temporary housing company manages, and you’ve got some regular business rolling in. And all from one relationship. Now, that’s a sales engine!

In the case of the photographer, the service is not being performed for the bridal consultants. It’s being performed for their clients. So, rather than being a repeat-service relationship, it is a referral relationship. However, it is not reciprocal. By the time the photographer hears from brides, they have already started planning the other elements of their wedding, so it’s too late to refer them to the bridal consultants he knows. But, he could reward the bridal consultants with a referral fee that he creates by either discounting his services when dealing with those brides they refer to him or by marking his services up by 15%.

Despite all the stories you hear, most business owners are honest people who have the desire to treat their customers fairly. In the case of the photographer, the bridal consultants provide the brides with a list of photographers that they can choose from. This allows the bride to make her own decision based on quality/price rather than being pushed into a relationship with a particular photographer.

Would you prefer to invest your time in building a relationship that brings you sale after sale or one that brings you a one-shot sale? It’s not magic. It’s not a get-rich quick scheme. It’s a simple key to business success.

So, the question is .. are you going to spend this afternoon pitching one account that could lead to one job or building a relationship that could lead to several jobs? Don’t get me wrong — it can take more than an afternoon to establish the most ideal relationships. But, in more cases than not, it’s no more difficult to form this one relationship than it is to form any other.

Start your sales engine!

Here are 4 easy ways you can boost your sales for little or no new expense …and without making major changes in your selling process.

1. Focus on What Your Customers Really Want

Your customers really don’t want your products or services. They don’t even want what those products or services do for them. What they really want is to gain the specific feeling they get after buying and using your products or services.

Keep this in mind when you create web pages, sales letters and other selling presentations. Emphasize the feelings produced by using your product instead of talking about what your product is – or how it works.

Tip: Convert the benefits delivered by your product or service into vivid word pictures. Then put your prospect in the picture by dramatizing what it feels like to be enjoying those benefits.

Example, if you sell financial products, describe what it feels like to enjoy an affluent life style without debt.

2. Keep Communicating With Your Previous Non-Buyers

You’ve heard it before – but I’ll say it here again. Most prospective customers will not buy the first time they see or hear about your product or service. You’re losing a lot of sales if you do not persistently follow up with those prospects.

Your follow up procedure can be as simple as periodically contacting them with a new offer. Or it can be more complex like distributing a newsletter or providing updated product information.

Tip: You cannot follow up with prospects if you don’t know how to reach them. Set up a system for collecting the names and contact information of all prospects who do not buy from you.

Example, offer a special report, a list of sources or some other valuable information your prospects cannot get anywhere else. Deliver it only by email or postal mail so you can get their contact address.

3. Encourage Questions

Questions from prospects may be a nuisance. But answering them can be very profitable.

Prospective customers only take time to ask questions when they have a high level of interest in your product or service. Providing a satisfactory answer to a prospect’s question often leads directly to a sale.

Invite prospects to ask questions when in live selling situations. And make it easy for them to ask questions when they are not …such as at your web site. For example, list a phone number or email address where you or someone else can answer their questions.

Tip: Include a Questions and Answers page on your web site with answers to frequently asked questions. It will reduce the number of questions you have to answer individually.

4. Make Buying Easier

Every non-essential action in the buying process is an opportunity for the customer to reverse their decision …causing you to lose the sale.

Look for ways you can make your buying procedure easier and faster. For example, many marketers use a multi-step shopping cart to get online orders when a simple online order form would do the job with just 1 or 2 quick clicks.

Tip: Don’t ask for unnecessary information during the ordering process. Instead, send a personalized “thank you” message after the sale and include a brief request for the information.

These 4 selling tactics may not be new to you. But are you using all (or any) of them? If not, they can easily boost your sales …for little or no new expense – and without making major changes in your sales process.
