During our initial conversation, David used the term “team” several times. I asked him why he so often refers to the team rather to than his own racing skills. He responded that “it’s a people sport” and went on to describe the many job specialties and skill-sets of the people who make up his team, and how they collaborate together, “for one common goal.”

“If everybody does their job, and takes pride in the work they do, that recipe equals success.”

David says that, in general, people are competitive: we’re always looking for an edge over the competition. This is fine when that drive works to support the team. However, when a team member is working to elevate themself rather than to support the team, the team suffers. However, David cautions that when we just let that person go, or in David’s words, “relieve him or her of her duties,” there is a danger that, “they may go over to a competitor and they can take some of [our team’s knowledge] and they can share it with that other team.” “Thankfully,” says David, “we don’t have a lot of politics in our sport.”

We then talked about trust. At 190 miles per hour, David places his trust in his team every weekend. In his words, “there’s a lot at stake for the driver.” However, “working in NASCAR at the top level of auto racing, these people have gained the right to be there. They’ve worked their way up from the bottom, and they’ve shown that they have the expert knowledge” to be trusted with keeping the drivers safe.
