When Wi-Fi 6 was introduced, it promised faster speeds: almost 3x faster than Wi-Fi 5. It was also the first Wi-Fi standard to communicate with multiple devices concurrently, rather than in sequence.

More specifically, an upgraded MU-MIMO (multi-user, multiple input, multiple outputs) doubled the number of device access point radios that were now able to communicate with the router. Plus, a new standard of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) allowed one transmission to deliver data to multiple devices at the same time. By the way, one of the rules of thumb of judging the capacity of a router is counting the number of antennas: the more antennas, the more users can “talk” at the same time using the MU-MIMO technology

Wi-Fi 6 also utilized auto-channel switching. While it has two independent radios each supplying up to 160 MHz of bandwidth (not frequency), it can switch down to 20, 40, or 80 MHz depending upon individual device requirements. Thus, again maximizing the efficiencies of communication with multiple devices. Thus, Wi-Fi 6 routers – including mesh devices – can easily handle 40 devices running concurrently.

There is an intermediate standard named Wi-Fi 6e.  It enables the third spectrum of 6 GHz (in addition to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and uses this spectrum to add several extra 160Mhz bandwidths.

So, what difference can we expect from the new Wi-Fi 7 standard that will begin rolling out in the new year? The Wi-Fi 6 maximum speed for a single device is 9.6 Gbps while Wi-Fi 7 is expected to have a maximum speed of 46 Gbps for a single client.

The Bottom Line

Wi-Fi 6e routers are very affordable with prices of less than $500 for a three-unit mesh pack covering a 7,000-square-foot office. For example, the TP-Link Deco XE75 currently retails at $350, while the Linksys MX8502 Atlas currently goes for $650. These will more than suffice for a typical SMB office. The greater bandwidth (speeds) offered by Wi-Fi 7 are rarely if ever going to be utilized in an office environment. So, go for a Wi-Fi 6e router or mesh system. And while you’re at it, consider the Verizon Internet Gateway – ideally suited to small and medium-sized businesses. The story tells of a well-respected family in Japan who had always been leaders in martial arts, a samurai family. The eldest son of the new generation was very skilled and very proficient and very sure of his ability. He did things easily and always won when he fought.

Come the day of the national titles he went to fight with full confidence in his skills.
The fight though did not go as expected, he lost, he lost badly, he was humiliated, his family was shamed. He left the tournament and he left the city. He went to live in the forest, far from people.

When he was alone he came to understand that he needed to put aside his arrogance and begin again to learn his art from the basics. He found the tallest tree in the forest, bowed in respect, and then began to practice his punches and his kicks by hitting the tree.

The result of is work did not show on the tree but it showed in his hands and his feet. In the beginning, he suffered terribly.

Day after day, week after week, month after month he practiced kicking and punching the tree and lived by foraging in the forest. The tree showed a little flattening of the bark but the change was not in the tree, the change was in the hands and the feet that struck it. Raw knuckles hardened, calluses formed, muscle and bone toughened, technique improved till the warrior could strike the unyielding tree with strength and with power, again and again, and again.

Finally, the tree started to yield, the bark began to chip away from the pounding and, day after day, the training continued.

Eventually, as the months passed, the tree had been ring-barked and it died. When the last leaf fell from the tree the young man knelt and honored the tree and left the forest to return to the city. He trained for a time with other fighters to get the rhythms of sparing and he enrolled to fight in the national titles.

Not only did he destroy any fighter who stood before him on the day, he never lost another fight in his life.

Interesting story but what does it mean to us?

It means that we need more than our natural ability to be the best we can be.

In many ways, we are warriors ourselves when we go out to work. We are not fighting with our fists but using all our skills and abilities to achieve outcomes for our businesses and for our families.

Sometimes we have core activities that are part of our jobs and that just have to be done.

Sometimes there are two outcomes, we do the job but we also learn skills that we need; consistent work habits, handling rejection, earning to listen, building word and language skills so people understand us clearly.

We need to be mature in our manner and methods and that only comes from experience. Some things you just need to do over, and over, and over, and over.

So take this little story and stick it in the back of your mind. When you have a job that is long, and hard, and that seems thankless, then stop and look closer at it. See if it is going to make you stronger and more capable.

Is this work actually “punching the tree” for your profession and your life? It is bringing change in you and who you are?

Still mired in the COVID crisis, plus the recent supply chain problems, we’ve come to rely more on purchasing goods and services via electronic means. Social engineering is all about manipulating people to believe that the website or email they are looking at, or the person they are talking with, is legitimate. We used to believe that only the elderly fell for social engineering. However, a recent study discovered that 80-85% of victims are in the age group of 22 to 55 years old.

Modern scammers study the organization they are going to impersonate. We know that they will often create web pages that are identical to the real ones, but did you know they will speak with the real representatives to discover the words they use, and the accents they have? So that when they call you, or you call them, they sound just like the real McCoy.

What do you mean, you would never call them? I personally know of a legitimate company that let payments for their 1800 number lapse. That number was immediately leased by scammers, and for nine months, the legitimate company’s website sent their own employees to the 1800 number. Duh!

According to the recent Truecaller Insights US Spam & Scam Report, 59.49M Americans (23%) report having lost money as a result of phone scams during the 12-month period – up from 56 million (22%) in the previous 12 months. The average monitory loss was $502, up from $351.

The phone scams can either be a voice robocall from a real number or from a spoofed number, or an SMS text from a real number or a spoofed number. Countermeasures against real numbers are pretty good. For example, Verizon uses a call filtering system to warn customers if a known spammer number is calling.

However, most robocalls no longer come from real numbers: mostly they come from spoofed IDs, and often from a spoofed number from your local exchange – that is, with your area code. So please, NEVER call back and start screaming at your neighbor, unless you’d like a police visit for verbally abusing an innocent person. Likewise, it used to be a good idea to get your numbers registered on the www.donotcall.gov website. This is now ineffective.

The good news is that the major carriers are trying to implement the FCC-mandated STIR/SHAKEN technology to identify the origin of each call. Yes, STIR/SHAKEN is a backronym, based on James Bond of MI6 fame, but it still sounds cool. The STIR part is a backronym describing a method for verifying the originator of a call as it enters a VoIP system. The SHAKEN backronym describes a system for dealing with VoIP-initiated calls entering the cell phone or POTS (traditional landline) networks without verifiable STIR information attached.

These protocols have every likelihood of eliminating spoofed calls originating in North America within a few years. The difficulty is going to be in getting other countries onboard. VoIP calls can be generated anywhere in the world with an internet connection. Thus, calls can be initiated with missing or false STIR information.

So, what can we do to decrease our chances of being defrauded?

1. Assume that every text is fraudulent unless you know who it is coming from or are expecting it.
2. Don’t answer calls from unknown numbers. Always send the call to voicemail, then either listen to the voicemail recording, or search for the number in your emails to see if it appears in a known person’s signature line. If confirmed, then call the person back – and add their number to your contacts list.
3. Even when the person seems legitimate, if it feels wrong, ask the person for a call-back number then research that number online before calling back.
4. If someone from your healthcare provider calls you and needs to verify you are who you say you are before they talk about HIPAA information, ask that person to verify first – after all, they called your number.
